About SWEET ANNIE...

Sweet Annie is a member of the wormwood family. In Northern Michigan it is grown as an annual. It is harvested in the fall after it flowers with a greenish-yellow bud like clusters at the top 1/2 of the stem. It is very aromatic and has anti-bug properties. Some people like to hang it from it’s stems for decoration and fragrance. Others like it strip the branches and use the fine foliage and buds in sachets to repel bugs. Sweet Annie is easy to start from seed however it wants optimal growing conditions. After a year, the branches will turn brown, but continue to remain fragrant.

I also grow plain wormwood, mugwort, ghost wormwood, and variegated wormwood which are green with ivory colored buds. When dried these wormwoods retain their color for several years. As they age dust can be a factor in dulling the colors. However, they do not have any fragrance compared to Sweet Annie. If you are looking for the rustic look of Sweet Annie and not the fragrance, you might like to use these alternate wormwoods for your projects.
